One good tern deserves another

After success on the 12th with Black Terns, I bagged an Arctic Tern the following day when one was amongst 14 Common Terns before they all flew north just after 4.30pm. Saturday saw another 4 Arctics with 8 Commons . Three more patch visits since then have failed to produce much of note, and specifically no Sanderling on Wednesday when plenty were turning up elsewhere.

On the breeding bird front, the first family of Coots were on Ferry Lane Lake tonight, with another bird incubating and 3 active Great Crested Grebe nests. There are a further 2 active Grebe nests and one Coot nest on Mons Pool (with another Coot nest apparently having been abandoned/predated, and a third no longer visible in a patch of reeds). I just hope water levels remain stable over the next couple of weeks so they don't all get flooded out.

  1. One moorhen nest in town on the London Road Pond, looked like a grebe was taking a fish into the reeds on the far side. Grebe nest on Blue Lake now empty, no sign of parents and chicks, probably hiding. Goslings on both lakes.
